Hi Ian,
My name is Greg Priest, 60 years old, living in Newcastle, Australia.
I have been an avid UK TV fan for many years, my favourite programs being English comedy.
I have collected a good range of comedy (those available on DVD that is), Porridge, Going Straight, Open All Hours, Allo Allo, Steptoe & many more, but my all-time favourite series is Last of the Summer Wine. Have just received series 9 & 10 from the UK & waiting for series 11 & 12 to be released.
Being retired now, I find plenty of time to spend on the internet & last night whilst researching the history of the Summer Wine characters, came across your website.
I just want to say “congratulations” on the effort that you have put into it & the result you achieved in finding Brian Wilde’s true birth date.
Keep up the excellent work,
Best regards,
Greg.

Will NEVER be another sitcom to rival Porridge - I watch it every day!

This is my all time fave programme.
The site is a fitting tribute to all of those that were lucky enough to take part in the making of Porridge.
I don\'t think that anyone other than Ronnie Barker could have pulled this off and such a shame that Richard Beckinsale passed away at such a young age.
Television would have been boring had it not have been for porridge. I watch the repeats over and over again.
Many thanks for a superb website.

I've always loved porridge and am now getting the episodes on DVD through the 'Ronnie Barker DVD collection'. My fave clip - it has to be ' Just desserts' - ' That is a plant' 'No it's not it's a tin of pineapple chunks' Brilliant!!

Porridge is quite possibly the best British comedy of all time and I have to say your site is excellent. I was sad to hear about Brian Wilde, a truely genius comic actor sadly lost. Keep up the good work on the site.

I'm 17 years old and have watched every Porridge episode at least 10 times. I've got every 1 on dvd in the box set and the going straight series. Ronnie Barker was a comedy genius and there has been no one with this talent! I've got pretty much every sitcom and sketch he's done and I say Porridge wins hands down. It's just a shame that Ronnie died he was a true gentleman and I haven't seen a sketch like it even scrubs doesn't come close. By the way what a wicked site I never new that anyone shared as much love for his comedy as I do

Very sad to hear of Brian's death, I think the show is brilliant, and the show could teach many of today's comedy shows a lesson on true humour.
The whole cast made the show what it is, pure geniuse.
Ronnie, Fulton, Richard and now Brian were all true masters of comedy.

Great site here mate.
Porridge was a fantastic sitcom. I agree with the fellow before me it seems these types of quality sitcoms have become redundant nowadays which is unfortunate.
Also saddened to hear of the death of Brian Wilde. He was a super character in Porridge.

I'm so sad that Brian has passed away, but now he can rejoin Ronnie & Richard & Fulton for a few more laughs. I can only imagine the four of them back together again. If only we had a channel from up there with them on it! Time still down here would be much funnier. Back to the dvds! Rest in peace Brian and best wishes to his family at this sad time. x

I am very sorry to hear of Brian's death, I'm 44 and grew up with the best of the British comedy sitcoms, through the 70's, 80's and 90's. From Dad's army, Porridge, Hi-de-hi, allo allo, minder, only fools and horses, the list goes on.........some truely excellent scripts, dialogue and characters ! The BBC used to show top notch comedy but I feel since the mid nineties comedy has become apathetic, I really can't think of a decent comedy sitcom since then that is entertaining and will stand the test of time with those mentioned above,..........where have all the decent script writers gone or is this country too PC these days?

I've stumbled upon your homepage by accident after hearing of Brian Wilde's death. I've looked down your cast list of Porridge and couldn't believe that Richard Beckinsale who played Godber isn't listed neither is Fulton Mackay the nasty prison officer with the Scottish accent these 2 actors were main characters of the show and to miss them out is stupid
Note from Porridge webmaster: The reason they are not on the page to which you refer is that those actors have their own pages which are referred to on the main cast list page. So to make it more clear I have added the links to the page with the other bios as well.

Brian Wilde was a master at playing a comedy role perfectly straight, and the timing and delivery of his lines were quite superb.
I'm not fond of Summer Wine but Wilde's performance and the scenery made it worth watching.

I just heard about Brian Wilde passing and I came here to pass the news on but you're clearly ahead of me.
Hope he RIP, he was awesome as Barrowclough. Really played the nervousness well and made the character seem real. It's been said by many actors that he was a genuinely good and intellegent man. I wish I got the chance to meet him. RIP.

The passing of Brian Wilde is extremely sad but as Mr. Mackay would say "Pull youself together!". The positive thing that we his fans should always remember is that his professional life was spent making people smile. He certainly left this world happier than when he arrived. Another true gentleman has departed and we are all the poorer for it. My thoughts are with his family at this time.
